Tool wear and spring back analysis in orthogonal machining unidirectional CFRP with respect to tool geometry and fibre orientation

Abstract Machining abrasive carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) is characterised by extensive mechanical wear. In consequence, the cutting edge micro-geometry and thus tool/material contact situation are continuously changing, which affects process forces machining quality. As a conclusion, fundamental understanding of tool wear behaviour its influencing factors crucial in order to improve performance lifetime tools. This paper focuses on analysis uncoated tungsten carbide inserts with different combinations angles geometries. For this purpose, orthogonal experiments unidirectional CFRP material conducted, where progression investigated means five parameters l α , γ * b c . detecting actual zone measure elastic spring back material, flank face marked via short pulsed laser processing. Furthermore, rate measured. It shown that loss due clearly varies along tool’s region highly dependent clearance angle Φ while influence tested rake mostly negligible. Especially =30° =60°, strong identified, more intense for smaller angles. all configurations, material’s increases intensity as progresses which, combination decreasing angle, main reason high thrust forces.
